Finding Truth in the Stillness: Reflections on Anger and Clarity
Have you ever tried to look at your reflection in a pot of boiling water? It’s impossible. The surface is distorted, the image blurred and broken. Anger has a similar effect on our ability to see clearly.
When we’re consumed by anger, our minds become a tempest. Emotions churn, thoughts race, and logic takes a backseat. In this state, it’s impossible to discern truth from falsehood, to understand the motivations of others, or to make wise decisions.
The Bible often speaks of the importance of a calm spirit. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” James 1:19-20 encourages us to “be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger … for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”
Just as boiling water needs to cool to allow for a clear reflection, our anger needs to subside to allow for clarity. This doesn’t mean suppressing our emotions; it means acknowledging them, understanding their root cause, and seeking to respond with grace and wisdom.
- Prayer: Turning to God in prayer is essential. Pour out your frustrations, seek His guidance, and ask for the strength to control your temper.
- Self-reflection: Take time to examine your own heart. What are the underlying issues that trigger your anger? Are there any patterns you can identify?
- Forgive: Holding onto grudges only fuels anger. Extend forgiveness to others, and seek forgiveness for your own shortcomings.
When we cultivate a calm spirit, we open ourselves to the truth. We can see situations with greater objectivity, understand the perspectives of others, and respond with love and compassion.
You cannot see your reflection in boiling water. Similarly, you cannot see the truth in a state of anger. When the water calms, clarity comes and it is in the still water you can see the reflection.
Remember you cannot see your reflection in boiling water, just like you cannot see the truth in a state of anger.
When the water calms, clarity comes.
May God bless you with a spirit of peace.
