We could learn a lot from crayons

“We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty, and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors. But they all have to live in the same box.”

“We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty, and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors. But they all have to live in the same box.”

I recently saw this at the Burger King in Jefferson City, TN and I liked it and had to do a blog post. The picture used for this blog post is that actual sign I took a photo of.

This simple yet profound observation offers a powerful metaphor for our human experience. Just like crayons, we are all unique individuals, each with our own strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and perspectives. As Christians, we are all part of the same family of God, bound together by shared experiences and a common destiny…Heaven.

The Sharp Crayons:

As a sharp crayon stands out and creates clear, vibrant lines, a Christian with a strong, active faith makes a distinct impact in the world. A sharp crayon is ready to be used by an artist to create something beautiful, just as a believer, sharpened by God’s Word and the Holy Spirit, is ready to be used by God to bring light, love, and hope to others.

The Pretty Crayons:

A Christian is like a pretty crayon in a box—full of vibrant color and potential, designed to bring joy and beauty to the world. Just as a pretty crayon catches your eye with its bright, appealing shade, a believer’s life, filled with the love of Christ, stands out and draws others in. The crayon’s color can transform a blank page into a masterpiece, just as a Christian, reflecting God’s grace and love, can brighten the lives of those around them. Though it may seem small, a pretty crayon has the power to make a big impact, reminding us that even simple acts of kindness and faith can leave a lasting mark in the world for God’s glory.

The Dull Crayons:

A Christian can sometimes be like a dull crayon—still capable of coloring, but lacking the sharpness to make a clear and vibrant mark. Just as a dull crayon struggles to leave a defined line, a believer who has drifted from prayer, Scripture, and fellowship may find it harder to reflect Christ’s light and love effectively. However, even a dull crayon has potential; it simply needs to be sharpened. In the same way, God continually calls His followers back to Him, offering grace and renewal. Through time spent in God’s Word and seeking His presence, a Christian can regain their sharpness and vibrancy, ready once again to be used by the Lord to make a beautiful impact in the world.

The Weirdly Named Crayons:

Christians are often like the weirdly named crayons you find in a box—unique, surprising, and not always what you expect. Just like colors such as “Macaroni and Cheese” or “Purple Mountain Majesty” grab your attention with their unusual names, Christians, too, are called to stand out with distinct qualities that reflect God’s creativity and diversity. Each believer has a unique calling, personality, and set of gifts that may not fit into the typical mold, but that’s exactly what makes them special. When we embrace the “weird” or unexpected aspects of who God made us to be, we bring a distinct color to the world that no one else can. It’s these unique, God-given traits that can draw people in, spark curiosity, and showcase the diverse beauty of the body of Christ.

Missing is this box of crayons is the Broken Crayon. We are all broken but God can still use us … just like broken crayons still color and do great and lightly Kingdom work.

The Colorful Box:

Despite our differences, we are all part of the same box, the human family. Just as crayons need to be kept together to create beautiful works of art, we need to embrace our diversity and learn to live in harmony with one another.

By understanding and appreciating our differences, we can build stronger relationships, foster greater empathy, and create a more just and compassionate world. Let us strive to be like the all of the crayons in the box, united in our diversity and committed to making the world a more colorful place. Together we can do great things.

Thank you Lord for all kinds of crayons.
