Suicide Hotline into Corn Maze – A Wisconsin farmer decided to put the suicide hotline into his corn maze as well as Your Life Matters on the the corn maze. Govin’s Farm in Menomonie, WI has an 11-acre maze (that is about the size of 14 football fields). On the corn maze it says “Your life matters” and has the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
While the idea for the design was easy, actually going through with it was not. I was worried the message would be kind of a downer while people tried to celebrate the seasons changing. “Fall is a fun time,” “You’re really celebrating a harvest, you’re celebrating everything that was good all summer long. And then to choose to do something like this … is it gonna drive people to your farm, or is it gonna drive them away?”
John Govin
Previous designs have honored the Boy Scouts, their fellow farmers, Alzheimer’s awareness, country star Garth Brooks and two mazes featuring the Green Bay Packers.
This corn maze doesn’t officially open until September 21, 2019 this year. They also plan to donate some of the proceeds to several suicide prevention groups.
