Robbing Peter to Pay Paula — I heard two coworkers say robbing Peter to pay Paul and it reminded me of how my mom would say it.
Robbing Peter to Pay Paula
How quaint it’s an idiom, which is what I have blogged on some too.
The phrase “robbing Peter to pay Paul” means taking something from one person or thing to give it to another, especially when it results in the elimination of one debt by incurring another. It suggests a short-term solution that creates a new problem while solving an old one.
The origin of the phrase is unclear, but it is believed to have originated in England in the 16th century, possibly referring to the taxes collected for the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.
My mom often said it to me after she would transfer funds. She we say “Paula” instead of “Paul” since that was her name. Like transferring from one of her accounts to another.
The name Paula is of Latin origin and means “small” or “humble.” It is a feminine form of the name Paul. Just like Paula, the name Paul is also of Latin origin and means “small” or “humble.” It is a popular name among Christians, as it is associated with the Apostle Paul, a key figure in the spread of Christianity.
I think it is quite neat that my mom would do that. I know when she would say it she would also giggle.
I plan to share some memories as I recall them. Feel free to to subscribe and join with me in reading on my memories, grief, mourning, sorrow, and more.
