Ringing in the New Year — with my mom passing away recently, I share a memory of how we would ring in the New Year as a kid growing up by going to the Shoney’s Breakfast Bar.
Ringing in the New Year
I remember as a kid and teenager, we would ring in the New Years come at Shoney’s doing the breakfast bar. Because we lived in North Knoxville, we would go to the Shoney’s on North Broadway. (Late 1980’s to early 1990’s).
My mom liked Shoney’s, we would go there often growing up other than for the New Year’s breakfast bar.
When we did d the Shoney’s New Year’s Breakfast Bar it usually was me, mom and my sister and sometimes we took one of our older neighbors. I think one year two of our neighbors joined us.
I would bring a little portable radio with us so we could listen to ball drop or a count down. I would have it on lightly so we could hear. Sometimes people around us wanted to listen too, so I would turn it out so they could hear too.
I think we would do this every year, even after the one neighbor passed away that normally went with us.
I haven’t rang in the new year like that since I was young teen.
I did mention, I plan to blog the memories of my mom. Even as I get older, I may forget and rereading these may reflect my memory.
Anyways! Happy New Year! How do you ring in the New Year?
I have rung in the New Year at a church, we would do finger foods and pray in the New Year.
One year, we rang in the New Year with youth at the church we were a part of at Xtreme Winter in Gatlinburg.
Today, my wife and I usually will set an alarm just before midnight. We would always get sparking grape juice (non-alcoholic) and do a toast. Plus, we get some sparklers and go outside and light some sparklers too.
To ring in 2025, we got Sparking Strawberry instead of Sparkling Grape Juice.
What do you do to bring in the New Year? Feel free to share in the comments and let us know if it’s traditional or not.
