National Grief Awareness Day: A Time to Honor and Heal — National Grief Awareness Day, observed annually on August 30th, is a day dedicated to acknowledging the universal experience of grief and loss. Whether it's the loss of a loved one, a job, or a dream, grief is a complex emotion that can affect us all in different ways.

This day is held annually on August 30. Angie Cartwright founded National Grief Awareness Day in 2014. 2024, marked the 10th Anniversary.

Why is National Grief Awareness Day Important?

  • Destigmatizing Grief: Grief is often seen as a weakness or something to be “overcome” quickly. This day helps to normalize the grieving process and encourages open conversations about loss.
  • Honoring Loved Ones: It provides an opportunity to honor and remember those we have lost.

  • Seeking Support: National Grief Awareness Day can be a catalyst for seeking support from friends, family, or professionals.
  • Promoting Healing: By acknowledging and addressing our grief, we can begin the process of healing and moving forward.
How to Observe National Grief Awareness Day
  • Reflect and Remember: Take time to reflect on your own experiences with grief and loss. Remember those you have lost and honor their memory.
  • Connect with Others: Reach out to friends and family who may be grieving. Share your experiences and offer support.
  • Seek Professional Help: If you’re struggling with grief, consider seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor.
  • Participate in Grief Support Groups: Joining a grief support group can provide a safe space to share your feelings and connect with others who understand.
  • Donate to Grief Organizations: Support organizations that provide grief counseling and support services.

Remember: Grief is a natural part of life, and there is no “right” way to grieve. It’s important to allow yourself to feel your emotions and seek the support you need. National Grief Awareness Day is a reminder that you are not alone, and there are resources available to help you through this difficult time.

Warning signs of suicide – The AFSP notes that people who take their own lives may speak about doing so prior to committing suicide. People should seek help if they or a loved one talks about feeling hopeless, having no reason to live or being a burden to others. People who speak of feeling trapped or feeling unbearable pain also may be exhibiting warning signs of suicide. #BeThe1To
