National Donut Day

National Donut Day is a delightful celebration that originated during World War I. It commemorates the efforts of Salvation Army volunteers, affectionately known as “Donut Lassies,” who provided comfort, including donuts, to soldiers on the front lines. These volunteers played a key role in boosting troop morale and even helped popularize donuts in the United States after the war.

The tradition of National Donut Day began in 1938 in Chicago as a fundraiser by The Salvation Army to support those affected by the Great Depression and to honor the service of the Donut Lassies. Held annually on the first Friday of June, the day is a tribute to service and sacrifice, celebrating the ongoing work of The Salvation Army in aiding those facing hardship. National Donut Day has evolved to symbolize the spirit of giving and the enduring impact of The Salvation Army’s mission to serve those in need.

Donuts in the Bible

Did you know there are Donuts in the Bible?

Not literally a donut we eat, but the words Do Not or it may be Don’t.

Donut* be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Galatians 6:7 NKJV

Donut* be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. James 1:16-17 NKJV

Donut* worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6 NLT

But donut* just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. James 1:22

“Donut* judge others, and you will not be judged. Donut* condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. Luke 6:37 NLT

And donut* be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2 NKJV

“Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.”

3 John 1:11

There are more but these are just some of the ones you will find.

*Now the Bible doesn’t say Donuts, I am using a play on words. Do Not is similar to the word Donut. First published June 5, 2015. Last republished or updated June 7, 2024.
