Good Things Come in Small Packages — is a saying my mom would always say because she was a short woman.

I had this blog post ready to write for a short bit. Then today, a customer came in who is shortish he was talking about small packages and it reminded me of this.

Ironically this saying is an idiom, I have been blogging about some of them here lately too.

My mom was very short, maybe just under 5 foot. She even wore kids sized shoes. She’d say most of the shoes would light up because they are kids.

The expression “Good things come in small packages” means that something small can have a big impact or be of great value. It suggests that one shouldn’t underestimate something based on its size or outward appearance.

For example, a small act of kindness can have a big impact on someone’s day, or a small book can contain profound wisdom.

Even a small donation can make a difference. It all ads up.

Never underestimate the short ones. For example, the Bible states that Zacchaeus was “short in stature””(Luke 19:3). This detail is significant because it highlights his determination to see Jesus, as he had to climb a sycamore tree to get a better view. Reminds me of the song my sister and I learned in children’s church growing up.

Lyrics to Zacchaeus, a wee little man:

(Verse 1)
Zacchaeus, a wee little man,
Climbed a sycamore tree, you see,
To get a better view, it’s true,
Of Jesus passing by.

(Chorus)
Zacchaeus, oh Zacchaeus,
He longed to see the Lord that day,
He climbed so high, up in the sky,
To hear the words that Jesus would say.

(Verse 2)
Jesus looked up in the tree,
And called out, “Zacchaeus, come down to me.”
Surprised and overjoyed, he hurried down,
To welcome Jesus into his town.

(Chorus)
Zacchaeus, oh Zacchaeus,
He longed to see the Lord that day,
He climbed so high, up in the sky,
To hear the words that Jesus would say.

(Bridge)
Zacchaeus’ heart was changed that day,
He gave his wealth to those in need,
He made amends for all his ways,
And planted seeds of love and creed.

(Chorus)
Zacchaeus, oh Zacchaeus,
He longed to see the Lord that day,
He climbed so high, up in the sky,
To hear the words that Jesus would say.

(Outro)
So let us learn from Zacchaeus’ plight,
To seek the Lord with all our might,
And open our hearts to His grace and light,
And live a life that’s truly bright.

My mom was small in stature but she made a huge impact on the lives of those around here. When I’d call to let people know that my mom passed away. They would share all kinds of stories how she treated them, impacted them, and genuinely cared for them.

She didn’t let her being short affect her at all. She did many big things such as raising my sister and I by her self, always working and even continuing her education earning multiple degrees and certificates.

Remember no matter your size or no matter what you do for God including the tiniest or smallest thing it all makes an impact and used to further His kingdom. We might not see it, but God does!
