Yes! You saw that right! Free Smoke Alarms for Tennessee Residents. There are certain qualifications to get one, but you might be one of them! One of the purposes of this movement is to help with fire safety!

This program is being run by The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO), the American Red Cross of Tennessee River and 514 participating Fire Deartments. Once you requested your free smoke alarm, they will have someone come and install the smoke alarm for you. They also hope to prevent fire deaths in Tennessee with these free smoke alarms to help with fire prevention.

This program began around 2012. Since they they have distrusted over 163,000 smoke alarms statewide. It is said that many folks do not have a working smoke alarm. If they do, they take the battery out or don’t replace the battery. Like when you change your clocks, change you batteries.

Since the program started in 2012, they believe that 218 lives have been saved from this Get Alarmed program. s

“Get Alarmed, TN!” is a grant-funded fire safety education and smoke alarm installation program administered by the State Fire Marshall’s Office (SFMO). Launched in November 2012, the program distributes fire safety education and 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms to participating fire departments. The fire departments then deliver the education and install smoke alarms in at-risk homes across the state.

“By comparing where ‘Get Alarmed’ smoke alarms were installed against fire incident reports, we can track the program’s success and effectiveness,” said Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance Deputy Commissioner Gary West. “’Get Alarmed Tennessee’ perfectly fits our mission to reduce fire deaths. Going forward, we will continue to focus our resources and help save more lives and protect more property.”

You may request a smoke alarm if you meet the following conditions:

These are the qualifications and notes about the program per the request page.

  • You do not already have working smoke alarms in your home.
  • The smoke alarms in your home are more than 10 years old.
  • You reside on the property in which you are requesting alarms.
  • The home is not new construction (new residential construction is ineligible for the program).

* Smoke alarms are not guaranteed. Your local fire department must be a participant in the Get Alarmed program.

*This is a smoke alarm installation program only. Alarms will not be shipped. A local fire department will install the alarms in the residence once the request is processed.

*All requests will be processed within 6-8 weeks.
