Flour, Faith, and Fellowship: Three States, One Substance — Have you ever considered the humble yet profound nature of flour? It’s a simple ingredient that, depending on how it’s used, can become many different things. This diversity within a single substance reminds us of a deeper truth in our faith.
Flour, Faith, and Fellowship: Three States, One Substance
Biscuits = Dry flour
Dumplings = wet flour
Gravy = Liquid flour
Three different states yet one similar base … flour
Biscuits = Dry flour
Biscuits represent the foundational teachings of our faith. They are firm, solid, and provide sustenance. Just as dry flour is essential for making biscuits, the foundational truths of Christianity—love, grace, and forgiveness—form the basis of our belief and give us spiritual nourishment. These truths are unwavering, just like the firmness of a well-baked biscuit.
Dumplings = Wet Flour
Dumplings embody the adaptability and flexibility of our faith. When flour mixes with water, it becomes pliable, just as our faith grows and adapts in response to our life’s journey. Dumplings, simmered gently, absorb the flavors around them, much like how our faith absorbs the experiences and lessons of our lives. This wet flour state signifies our ongoing transformation and readiness to blend with God’s will, showing that our faith is alive and dynamic.
Gravy = Liquid Flour
Gravy represents the flow of God’s grace in our lives. Just as flour in its liquid state can envelop and enhance a dish, God’s grace surrounds us, enriching every aspect of our lives. This fluid state of flour reminds us that God’s grace is ever-present and flowing, adapting to our needs and circumstances. It binds us together in love and understanding, much like how gravy brings together all the elements of a meal.
Three States, One Base
Though biscuits, dumplings, and gravy appear different, they all originate from the same base—flour. Similarly, our faith manifests in different ways throughout our journey, but its core is always the same. This analogy beautifully illustrates the Trinity in Christianity—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Three distinct expressions, yet one divine essence.
So, as we break bread, biscuits, dumplings and/or gravy together, let us remember the unity and diversity within our faith. Just as flour transforms into various forms to nourish us physically, our faith, rooted in God, nourishes us spiritually in many profound ways.
Blessings to you all on this beautiful journey of faith.
