Finishing the Race: A Lesson in Perseverance
A Reflection on Paul's Epistle and Stephen Akhwari — Paul’s words, penned in 2 Timothy 4:7, towards the end of his earthly journey, resonate deeply with athletes and spiritual seekers alike. They encapsulate the essence of perseverance, the unwavering determination to see a task through to the end.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

2 Timothy 4:7

One athlete who embodied this spirit of perseverance in a particularly poignant way was Stephen Akhwari, an Olympian from Tanzania. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Akhwari suffered a severe leg injury during the marathon. Despite the pain, he refused to give up. He limped his way to the finish line, hours after the other competitors.

When asked why he had continued, Akhwari replied, “My country did not send me to Mexico City to start the race. They sent me to finish.”

Akhwari’s words echo Paul’s sentiment. In the spiritual race, God calls us not merely to start, but to finish strong. It’s a race that demands endurance, discipline, and unwavering faith no matter the obstacles in our path.

Just as Akhwari persevered through physical pain, we too may face trials and tribulations on our spiritual journey. Yet, with God’s grace and our own determination, we can overcome obstacles and reach the finish line. We cannot do it on our own, we can only do it through Him and Him alone.

Let us, therefore, approach our spiritual race with the same mindset as Akhwari and commit to finishing the course, no matter the cost or pain. May we draw strength from God’s Word, lean on His Spirit, and persevere until the end. He will see to it that we finish well.y
