Most of eating fish was because Catholics did believe in abstaining from eating meat on Christmas Eve, so they would eat fish or seafood.

It is said it was introduced into American in the late 1800’s. Over 200 years ago.

The number seven was chosen, some believe it was choose as it was the most repeated number in the Bible. (Being repeated over 700 times). Others may believe it was where God rested on the 7th Day, when His Creation was completed.

There are other theories that believe it could represent the seven Sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church. Others will say it represents the Seven Hills of Rome.

As you guessed it, it occurs on Christmas Eve, December 24, each year.
