This day is a public holiday in Basque Country, Cantabria, and Galicia. The general population is off at most businesses, schools. Public life is quiet on this day. You will find most businesses closed, but bakers and public transportation is usually still open.

Saint James is the son of Zebedee. He was an apostles and a brother of John the Apostle. St. James was beheaded in Judea in the year 44 CE. It is believed that he is buried under what is now the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Celebrated annually on July 25 and widely celebrated in the Catholic faith.
