In sacrificial times, they believed the people’s sins were passed onto a goat and it was released, driven away. Basically on the Day of Atonement, the Jewish Priest would confess the sins of all the people over the goats head. It is then released into the wilderness. That symbolized bearing their sins away. Read Leviticus 16 for more about this.

For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Hebrews 10:4

There is nothing that can take away our sin, including animals like bulls or goats. There is only one that can. That is the precious blood of Jesus Christ. He died once and for all. That blood shed on the cross won the victory over sin and death. There is no need to repeat this scapegoat or any other sacrifices like that. The veil was torn so we can have direct access!

We don’t need to confess to a priest, to confess for us or transfer our sin. We can go directly to Christ. We can ask him for forgiveness of our sins. No one can come to Father, but through Christ.

That is why we must be sheep and not goats!
