The inland regions experienced severe flooding, with places like Newport, Tennessee, particularly hard-hit. In Greene and Unicoi Counties, several bridges were washed out, including the Erwin Highway bridge. The Conway Bridge off Fish Hatchery Road into Briar Thicket was completely destroyed, and much of Fish Hatchery Road was. covered and closed.

In Greene County, all bridges were closed due to the extensive damage, and even a curfew was imposed to ensure public safety. Newport, TN and even Western North Carolina, including Asheville, also faced major flooding and road closures, disrupting daily life and travel.

River Flooding and Dam Overflow

The Nolichuckey River areas experienced significant flooding, with water levels at Douglas Dam rising 12-16 feet, which made the lake above summer levels, causing the dam to spill at maximum capacity.

School Closures and Water Supply Issues

Many schools closed out of caution. In Greeneville City and Greene County, schools are closing for the entire week due to the hazardous conditions. The local water supply was also severely affected, with a critical water pump failure leading to a depletion of available water resources.

Power Outages and Ongoing Challenges

The hurricane caused widespread power outages, leaving many residents without electricity for extended periods. The impact of these outages was felt across the region, complicating recovery efforts and daily life.

A Community in Recovery

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has left communities across the Southeast grappling with the extensive damage and working towards recovery. The resilience and spirit of the affected residents are evident as they come together to rebuild and support one another in this challenging time. Usually aftermath of a hurricane hits coastal areas, however Hurricane Helene impacted many many miles inland, non-costal areas.

Unicoi County Hospital Flooding and Rescue Operations

Unicoi County Hospital in Erwin, Tennessee, faced a dire situation as floodwaters rapidly surrounded and entered the facility. With the rising water levels, 54 people, including patients and staff, were forced to evacuate to the roof. Helicopter rescue operations were conducted to safely evacuate everyone from the hospital. This dramatic rescue highlighted the severity of the flooding and the urgent need for emergency response.

Impact on Kentucky

Kentucky was not spared from Hurricane Helene’s wrath. The remnants of the storm brought heavy rains and strong winds, causing widespread flooding and power outages across the state. In Paducah, the storm’s center stalled, leading to prolonged periods of heavy rainfall and significant flooding. Many communities faced road closures and damage to infrastructure, complicating recovery efforts.

Impact on Georgia

Georgia experienced severe impacts as Hurricane Helene swept through the state. South Georgia was particularly affected, with many areas suffering from extensive damage and power outages. In Augusta, the storm toppled trees and left over 200,000 residents without power. Flooding was a major concern throughout the state, with both urban and rural areas facing significant water damage.

Six Flags parks were affected by Hurricane Helene. For instance, Six Flags St. Louis had to close on Friday due to the remnants of the hurricane. Additionally, multiple Six Flags parks experienced disruptions, with some roller coasters and attractions knocked out of action due to the heavy rain, strong winds, and even tornado watches brought by the storm.
