Who knew that singing could be a prescription for a healthier heart? #AmazingGrace
Amazing Grace is good for the heart study show
A recent study conducted by researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee has found that singing along to familiar songs, especially “Amazing Grace,” can significantly improve blood vessel function in older adults with coronary artery disease.
Amazing Grace was written by John Newton, an English Anglican clergyman and poet. He penned the lyrics in 1772 based on his life story. He was involved in the slave trade, a practice that he later came to deeply regret. After a series of personal trials and a religious conversion, he became a minister and wrote “Amazing Grace” as a reflection on his own life and experiences. The hymn expresses gratitude for God’s mercy and forgiveness, particularly in light of Newton’s past sins based on 2 Corinthians.
The study involved 65 participants aged 65 and older who were diagnosed with coronary artery disease. The patients were divided into two groups: one group was asked to sing along to a video with a voice professor for 30 minutes, while the other group listened to a recording of the same songs.
The results were impressive. The group that actively participated in singing showed a significant improvement in blood vessel function compared to those who merely listened. Among the songs tested, “Amazing Grace” had the most pronounced positive effect on heart health.
Why is singing so beneficial for the heart?
Researchers believe that singing can have a number of positive effects on cardiovascular health, including:
- Reducing stress: Singing can help to reduce stress and anxiety, both of which can contribute to heart disease.
- Improving mood: Singing can boost mood and increase feelings of well-being, which can also have a positive impact on heart health.
- Increasing social connection: Singing can be a social activity that helps to connect people with others, which has been shown to have numerous health benefits.
For older adults who may have physical limitations, singing can be a great way to stay active and improve their overall health. The study suggests that even a short daily singing session can have a significant impact on heart health.
So, next time you’re feeling stressed or down, consider breaking out a song. It might just be the best medicine for your heart.
