A Call to Prayer and Fasting: Governor Bill Lee’s Proclamation

In a move that harkens back to the days of our Founding Fathers and past presidents during times of national concern, Governor Bill Lee has signed a resolution calling for a significant spiritual undertaking: 31 days of prayer and fasting. This initiative, set to commence on July 1, 2024, invites the citizens of Tennessee to engage in a period of solemn reflection and earnest supplication¹.

The resolution, known as Tennessee House Joint Resolution 803, was passed with overwhelming support in both the state Senate and House. It is a call to action for the people of Tennessee to “seek God’s hand of mercy and healing on Tennessee”¹. The legislators of the state have recognized the sovereignty of God as Creator, acknowledging His authority to judge and bless not only the state but also the nation as a whole.

The resolution urges Tennesseans to humbly ask for forgiveness and to seek divine intervention to heal the land from the afflictions of violence, human trafficking, addiction, and corruption. It is a plea for the Holy Spirit to fill the halls of government, classrooms, businesses, churches, and homes with peace, love, and joy¹.

Accompanying the resolution is a letter from State Senator Mark Pody, which further encourages citizens to acknowledge the shortcomings of the Church in upholding God’s principles, to seek His forgiveness and mercy, and to commit to standing firmly on those principles moving forward¹.

This call to prayer and fasting is not just a local affair; it has resonated beyond the borders of Tennessee. California Pastor Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills has called upon “every pastor” and “every Christian church” in the nation to join with Tennessee and intercede for America and all the states¹.

As we approach the month of July, let us reflect on the power of collective prayer and fasting. It is a time to come together, regardless of denomination or creed, to seek guidance, wisdom, and healing. It is a time to strengthen our faith and to renew our commitment to the values that are foundational to our community and our nation.

Let us embrace this period of prayer and fasting with open hearts, and may our united efforts bring forth a season of renewal and hope for Tennessee and beyond.
