3 Songs I Remember from the Boy Scouts
I remember three songs that was sung.
- Prairie Flower
- Don’t Step in my Hobo Stew
- Gray Squirrel
Two of the songs were sung when you lost something and at campfire, you had to come up to the front of all scout troops and sing and dance to that song. That is Prairie Flower and Gray Squirrel.
Today that is called hazing and not allowed. But, it did teach you to keep up with your own stuff when on a camping trip. No one wanted to do that in front of all the Boy Scout troops present.
Yes! I was one of those Boy Scouts that had to do this.
I figured I would share the lyrics that I remember to those songs.
Prairie Flower
I’m a little prairie flower
I’ve been dancing for an hour
May I Stop?
The crowd would say No and then you repeated those lines. Usually, you did that 3-5 times. Basically you twirl in a circle. One hand on your hips and the other on your head.
Another one of the Songs I Remember from the Boy Scouts is …
Hobo Stew
This one we would sing if we made hobo stew on a camping trip. Hobo stew is a simple thing to make and you use the campfire to make it. You put stew meat, carrots, potatoes, onions and seasoning into aluminum foil and seal it. Then you put it into the hot coals to cook.
Anyways this is what we would sing. It is to the tune of a song by Elvis Presley called Blue Suede Shoes.
Well, it’s a-one for the money
Two for the show
Three to get ready now go, cat, go
But don’t you
Step in my hobo stew
Hoho Hobo stew
Gray Squirrel
This was a dance song. You would face the audience and sing it. Then when it came to the bushy tail, you would turn around put your butt to the audience and wag it.
Gray Squirrel, Gray Squirrel
Shake Your Bushy Tail
Gray Squirrel, Gray Squirrel
Shake Your Bushy TailPut your Nose between your toes
Gray Squirrel, Gray Squirrel
Shake Your Bushy Tail
BTW, I did make Eagle, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. I attained the rank in 1994. Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle. It will be 26 years in July!
